Trail will connect the Empire State Trail to North Third Street
In a few weeks, it will be possible to walk safely and more easily from downtown Hudson to the Empire State Trail.
The Columbia Land Conservancy is partnering with Tahawus Trails LP, a professional trail design and construction company, to create a new trail system in Hudson. These trails will connect North Third Street to Mill Street and beyond to the Empire State Trail. Work is slated to begin next week, and is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.
“This connector trail is the first step toward making North Bay, Greenport, and the adjacent natural areas more accessible from the City of Hudson. Our goal is to be respectful of our neighbors during the construction phase and to leave behind a lasting community resource,” says Patrick Knapp, Director of Public Lands.
The new trails will include stone steps, crushed stone landings, and a trail that gradually switchbacks between destinations, making it easier and safer to access the thousands of acres of conserved land and public trails close to Hudson. Building this trail is the start of a three-phase project that also includes revitalizing Charles Williams Park and creating a trail connecting downtown Hudson to CLC’s Greenport property and the thousands of acres nearby.
“This project was identified as a high-priority action in The Plan to Conserve Columbia County,” says President Troy Weldy. “Creating these trails and improving the park will make it possible for more people to access nature close to home much more easily.”
