Hunter Education Course

Join CLC president Troy Weldy for a full-day, in-person NY Hunter Education course at the to-be-opened Taghkanic Community Forest!
The NY Hunter Education course (Hunter Safety course) is required to purchase a hunting license in New York. The course covers the necessary safety techniques and responsibilities that a hunter must know when using a gun, muzzleloader, crossbow, or bow to pursue wild game. Find a full list of topics covered in the course here.
What to expect: The training will take place at the site’s hunting cabin, which is accessible by car. If individuals prefer to walk or have a low clearance vehicle, the path to the cabin is approximately a third of a mile over gravel terrain. Following registration, participants will receive the address and directions to the Taghkanic Community Forest.
What to bring: Please bring a folding chair, a water bottle, a bagged lunch, and weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. A way to take notes is recommended for this program!
What not to bring: Please, no dogs and no personal firearms.
Please note the following:
– All In-Person Hunter Education Courses require the completion of homework prior to attending an in-person course. Proof of completed homework must be brought to the in-person course. The homework can take several hours to complete.
– Age requirements: Students must be 11 years old or older to take this course (Note: In New York State, the minimum age to hunt is 12.) Students younger than 16 must have a signed permission slip from a parent or legal guardian to allow for the handling and shooting of a firearm during this course.
– Students must complete the required homework, attend all sessions of the course, demonstrate proper attitude and safety, and pass a final exam of 50 questions to obtain a Hunter Education Certificate. After successful completion of the course, students will receive a Hunter Education Certificate of Qualification, which is required for purchasing a first-time hunting license in New York State.
