Land Camp: Forest management

The popular series is back for its second year!

Land camp invites participants to learn about and try land management techniques in a supportive environment so that they can feel comfortable implementing them at home. This series of workshops is ideal for those already actively managing their land, those who would like to start, and those interested in learning more about how CLC manages the properties we care for!

The workshop will focus on forest management techniques! Using the forest at Schor as a classroom, we will explore how to keep forests healthy through techniques including timber harvests and deer exclosures. Led by Patrick Knapp, CLC Public Lands Manager, and Steve Day, logger and owner of Day’s Timber, individuals will leave with an understanding of how these methods can leave forests healthier and more resilient to climate change. This workshop is ideal for individuals who manage five acres or more of forest and are eager to play an active role in creating healthy forests!

What’s involved: This event will include walking approximately one mile along the Red Fox Loop, a forested trail featuring packed earth. The group will stop often to discuss forest management along the way. Additional trail information can be found here.

Packing list: Water, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, and a way to take notes (i.e. notebook, smartphone).

What not to bring: Please, no dogs.

About Steve Day: Growing up in Chatham, NY, and spending his formative years on his grandparents’ dairy farm taught Day the importance of conservation and good land management. He took those lessons and the hard work ethic learned from his family to Paul Smith’s College, where he earned a degree in Forestry. He has since grown his business to help landowners achieve their goals while promoting responsible forest management to protect and restore northeast forests. Day’s business is FSC certified through the NE Master Logger Certification Program and a member of the Society of American Foresters.  In his free time, he enjoys mountain biking and exploring the woods of the northeast.
